North Shore Roundup - Frequently Asked Questions - FAQ's Page

What is an Alcoholics Anonymous Roundup?
As one member puts it the best an AA Convention (Roundup) is "just a darn good AA Meeting blown up big". The North Shore Roundup is an AA Convention with Al-Anon/Alateen participation. Many friends and visitors of Alcoholics Anonymous and its members also attend. There are many AA conferences held around the world. One of the most common misconceptions of these gatherings is that they are regular AA meetings. Conventions and conferences are special events, which require a substantial amount of funding. This convention is self supporting. No group monies are used to pay for this event. The costs of this convention are met through registration fees. No baskets are passed. Attendance is voluntary, and as responsible AA members, we pay our own way.

How much does the North Shore Roundup cost? The cost per ticket is $25.00 Canadian. The ticket entitles you entry into all of the Roundup meetings and dances. Extra cost for refreshments, literature, speakers' tapes/cd's and other AA and Al-Anon related material for sale in the lobby on the Conference (3rd) Level.

Where does the North Shore Roundup take place?
The North Shore Roundup takes place in Vancouver, BC, Canada, at the
Hyatt Regency Hotel on the corner of Burrard and Georgia in the heart of downtown Vancouver.

Do I get a special rate at the Hyatt if I'm there for the Roundup? Yes, but please mention to the Hyatt staff that you are staying at the hotel to attend the North Shore Roundup, when you are reserving your room.
The Special offer, for 2008, is: NSR Hyatt Regency reservations - all rooms at the hotel have been completely renovated.

(T
he cut off date of this special offer was February 21st, 2008
) The Hyatt Regency Hotel will continue to allow any attendees to make their reservations at the group rate based on availability. Call the Hyatt at 1-888-421-1442 (toll-free) or visit their web site, Hyatt Regency Hotel, Vancouver, B.C., to book your room in advance!

Why is the Roundup called the North Shore Roundup? It is called the North Shore Roundup because it is sponsored by members of AA and Al-Anon who's home groups are in North or West Vancouver and Bowen Island. The reason the roundup is not in any of these locations is no convention center large enough to handle the number of people who attend the NSR.

How many people go to the North Shore Roundup? In the last 23+ years approximately 2000 people have attended each Roundup!  We are limited to selling 2000 tickets.  In 2006 we were sold out Saturday afternoon.  If you're planning on attending, please buy your ticket early to avoid disappointment.

What is there to do at the Roundup? Alcoholics Anonymous and Al-Anon speakers from all over North America are chosen to speak at the large meetings on Friday evening, Saturday afternoon and evening and on Sunday morning and afternoon. There are smaller meetings throughout the weekend with varying themes. There are dances on Friday and Saturday nights.  There are Marathon Meetings starting at 10:00 PM Friday night in the Oxford Room on the Convention (3rd) Level, running continuously, an "AA Meeting" every hour on the hour, until 9:00 AM Sunday morning, 35 continuous hours of "Meetings".

Where in the hotel are the meetings and other events happening? Below you'll see the floor plan of the Plaza (2nd) Level and Convention (3rd) Level of the Hyatt Regency. On it you'll find the location of meeting rooms, the registration area, refreshments and restrooms.

Hard of hearing and deaf attendees.  The NSR Committee would appreciate being advised if you are planning to attend and the number in your party, so we can reserve your seat(s) in the designated ASL (front) area at the main, larger, meetings.  If you have a friend or acquaintance who can sign for you please bring them to the Roundup and we will accommodate them, free of charge.

Can I smoke at the Round Up? Outside only. There is a City of Vancouver By-law banning smoking in public buildings, but there are designated areas outside of the hotel with ashtrays provided for smokers.
